In 2022, USA Fencing decided to change the way it does merchandise. It left a decade-long partnership to make room for collaborations with smaller but well-considered brands that fit the sport's preppy character. That's the door we walked through this spring, as a specialist bringing much-needed attention to the feet: socks. After exchanging some ideas with Phil Andrews, the CEO of USA Fencing, we decided on embroidery as a way to inject some fun.
Fencing comes in three weapons — sabre, foil, épée — but one discipline. Instead of picking a side, we put all three blades into a single embroidered mark and drew it three different ways — three readings of one idea, like Monet returning to his haystacks.
One thing we knew from day one of the project was that we wanted to work with real hands. The drawings came from FoamWork, an illustration team based in Seoul. For the stitching, we partnered with Operation Embroidery , a local shop within walking distance of our studio. It was important to us to work with someone we could stand beside in person, to make sure every mark was laid correctly — stitched directly into the knit of the sock, not onto a patch. Thread on a ribbed cuff is unforgiving because there's no hiding a wrong stitch.
